Re: Aquila chrysaetos 2010-2022
the chick grows and looks beautiful when it stands up to its full height and spreads its wings. so you can fully see its dimensions. I think it already has a weight of 700-900 grams.

Mom brought a young ungulate to the nest. I've never been so excited to see what a bird brings for her young. It has been a pretty varied diet thus far. In Romania there are three possibilities, and I being an American, am not familiar with the size and character of any of these deer. Red deer (Cervus elaphus), fallow deer (Dama dama), or roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). Hopefully those familiar can key this one to species for us.

Hoof:
I could see some spots, if barely visible when she dragged the carcass back. Overall size:
EDIT: Johan Krüger has helpfully noted that it was Capreolus capreolus in YT chat. Tusen takk igjen. :>

I was sleeping when Mom brought this prey live, so missed your contribution in chat. My apologies. Thank you for the initial identification, as well!

In the first screenshot, one can see the roe deer fawn's small hoof being held just above that of the hoof of a mature deer. Did this belong to another roe? Was it scavenged? Or might this be a display of exceptional hunting prowess? I know it is possible, but the killing of adult ungulates is documented much less.
In this second screenshot one can compare the size difference of this leg to the fawn held up in a previous screenshot.

Base of tail has been stripped of fur or was otherwise mangy.
Mom is holding this slightly out in front of herself, which can give the illusion of larger size. Just as her own eaglet is helping to display. The hide may also be flapped out some as the top half of the body was eaten away.
I think (?) one can see the tip of the tail in this screenshot. Not all red foxes have a white tipped tail, but this one is also decidedly uniform. From this angle, at least.
It isn't easy to find imagery of golden eagles with European pine martens in their talons. This is a mature female eagle.
Consider the pine marten:
I honestly don't feel confident saying one way or the other at this point. Need more familiarity. Need to see more obvious pine martens and obvious red foxes with mature golden eagles.
But maybe you have enough familiarity to know better than I.

Early in the day before the fox/marten was brought to Nest Sweet Nest, Mom appeared with what may have been rich organ meat. And the little one appeared to mantle over it.
Later, when the fox/marten was opened up, we had some fun with intestines!
It reminded me a little of the spaghetti scene from Lady and the Tramp, but much more real and amusing.

One more. There were little visitors to the nest this morning. Great tits (Parus major). See them at the back edge there?
Goodnight wild ones of Bucovina. :>
