Faint-hearted viewers do not panic ahead of time by making loud hasty statements, this creates a bad aura for the nest.

I think my mother is right on the edge of the nest right next to the room, because she can be heard at 22:39:00 hitting the room with feathers.

This is reassuring.
I find the judgement unnecessary, however. In the time I was present in chat, I did not notice anyone making "loud hasty statements". Expressing and discussing concern does not make one "faint-hearted". Discussion is how we came to learn about this potential change in behavior nearing week four. Otherwise, we must hope that an expert will randomly address questions and concerns by chance.

Does anyone recognize the species by what is left of this bird?
The light was difficult here, but as the prey swung you could see the ears of a leporid. Pretty small, so perhaps the leveret of a European hare (Lepus europaeus)? Or is it the introduced European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)? Either way, pretty scant being the only meals of the day, if we didn't miss one very early in the morning before the camera battery recharged enough to stream.

let's not jump to conclusions - we must wait until tomorrow! keep my fingers crossed!eagleluver wrote:Cazigg.. He calls the Cam the 'room' for some reason.. Human activity was heard by the nest today more then once and I hope it is not the reason that Mom is not in nest with this young 4 week old eaglet... 4 weeks old is not normal to be left alone at night

I think it's Nucifraga caryocatactes

Lady hawk have been watching eagles, and all types of raptors (including golden eagles) for years. She's the most knowledgeable person I know on this subject. I just want now to get the cam back and see the little one doing well. Mom is probably close and might have been back to nest during the night. Regarding food, the little one had a very big crop after the second meal. He will be hungry in the morning, but he'll be okeagleluver wrote:Roma, I don't know where you are getting your information from but it is NOT normal for an eaglet of only 4 weeks old to be left alone on the nest at night
Eagles chicks have their downfeathers at 2 weeks old so he shouldn't get cold.

Thank you ! I'm glad mom is protecting the baby from the rain.

I know LadyHawk very well.. Yes, she is knowledgeable. Eaglet's are born with Natal Down which is replaced by Thermal Down which helps them thermoregulate but they do not get their protective Contour feathers until after 6 weeks old. The Contour feathers keep their down dry in inclement weather. Until then they are still susceptible to inclement weather and can suffer hypothermia etc., if their down get's wet and it is cold so they still need their parent to shelter them and keep them warm until then. I'm very happy to see Stelian's post/pic of Mom sheltering baby from rain there from today 5/28

Spotted nutcrackers (Nucifraga caryocatactes), like the vast majority of their corvid-kin (Crow Family), have black feet however (excepting the oriental magpies and a handful of jays). The beak also didn't look so imposing. This feature wasn't easily seen in still screen shots, unfortunately. Ah well. Thank you for taking a peck at it. ;>
