Very sad. Nina was very loved. Thank you very much.Raven wrote:Hello, Stelian! You're welcome. Yes, Nina was rescued by expert climber, Mr. Kuppi (spelling?). Sadly, s/he perished 2 days, 3 hours, and 37 minutes after falling from the eyrie.
Edit: I probably should have mentioned, Nina was 107 days, 15 weeks on the day s/he fell. That's how far behind s/he was.

鳥海 - Chōkai, a captive (Omoriyama Zoo, Akita City) golden eagle thought to be 47 years old has died on 24th of July, 2023. Another golden named after a mountain, as is proper! ;> The article, written in Japanese, notes that he was found by locals at the foot of Mt. Chōkai in the 1970s.
I found a video. Sure makes me blue when they must be caged. He was looking his age in 2015, but one can see his spirit flickering. Appears to have neurological issues, and cloudy vision. Poor old man. Still beautiful. 47. Even if that is slightly off, what a feat!

06:02:08 - Alunu/a calling distantly.
07:05:12 - Loud wood-splitting sound.
07:22:54 - Alunu/a calling distantly. There is a lot of calling during this hour.
10:27:21 - Alunu/a's voice grows loud as s/he approaches the vicinity of the eyrie.
10:29:52 - S/he is definitely perched close by.
10:51:52 - After a pause, the vocalizations begin again.
10:53:12 - The barest view of Alunu/a in the form of his/her cast shadow. So close, yet so far. As s/she leaves beyond the back slope, his/her voice is carried away. I agree with Stelian. Alunu/a was trying to keep track of a parent, and is now mobile enough to attempt to follow. Calling rate is higher in the presence of parents. An amusing note from David H. Ellis, 'Excessive hunger calling (Pssa) of nestlings. There is a general rule in raptor watching: "never believe a nestling claiming that it is hungry." Young birds, even when sated, will continue to call for food (at some decreased level of frequency and loudness), so in all cases, careful comparisons are required with behavioral norms.'
10:55:55 - Alunu/a's faint, distant calls pause for 14 minutes.
11:09:59-11:10:04 - Final faint detection on this day.
"Hourly calling rate. - The number of calls per hour did not change with time after fledging. . .Calling rate did not differ between the sexes. . .Calling rate did not change as the birds aged after fledging, although we observed a high degree of individual variation." - Postfledging Behavior of Golden Eagles, by O'Toole et al.

I recorded this moment with sound. I'll keep it for the archive in case it turns out to be the last and only time we see Alunua.

2023-08-02 - Day 86; Week 12. Post-fledging: Day 15.
09:58:29 - Possibly Alunu/a distantly calling. Followed by a chainsaw.
11:10:24 - Is this a Eurasian blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla)?
12:54:56 - Alunu/a's voice, approaching.
12:55:33 - S/he flies over the eyrie. <3 Thank you to Stelian, and Johan for the time stamp.
With YouTube chats not keeping for as long as they once did, I would have probably missed it, if I didn't have good luck with my scanning method. It's a nice view too! A delight to see a strong flight.
13:46:02 - This may be Lucina's voice, followed by Alunu/a.

Re: CUIBUL ACVILEI DE MUNTE NR. 2 - THE NEST OF THE GOLDEN EAGLE 2 (AQUILA CHRYSAETOS) 2023
Winter severity, the cyclical nature of some species (i.e. certain hares; not familiar with L. europaeus, mind), and low prey years in general, can influence whether golden eagles choose to nest in a given year. For example, in Estonia they seem to have 3 year cycles. Third year is most productive, first year is least (meaning nesting isn't attempted, or is least likely to succeed). Birds are more important than mammals in this population's diet, however. At odds with the species as a whole across most of its range.
Romania is a mystery to me. I found it interesting that this year the hares appeared to be scarce (4 delivered to the nest, as opposed to 11 leporids in 2021), but Caliman, and Lucina were able to make a successful shift to red fox pups. Adaptable. I wonder if this is a natural cyclical decline, or if something more insidious is occurring.
Here in California, the nest I know best in the flesh, has laid annually for at least the past 6 years, but they are blessed with abundant ground squirrels (Otospermophilus beecheyi), and the cyclical black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) aren't heavily relied upon in this region.
It will be interesting to see what Lucina can teach us on this matter. If she and her mate are not stressed nutritionally or otherwise, and the weather isn't too harsh, eggs should be produced.
Having said that, I can't promise that I will be available to document. I live an unstable life, my mind is a disordered place, and my body protests being sedentary for too long. For me, it is a big commitment.

Starvation is generally a natural check and balance. A necessity in a healthy, self-sustaining system. But in this case, it is the result of an unraveling ecosystem.
It is impacting a subspecies in steep decline. And that is truly heartbreaking, on both the individual, and population level.

Re: CUIBUL ACVILEI DE MUNTE NR. 2 - THE NEST OF THE GOLDEN EAGLE 2 (AQUILA CHRYSAETOS) 2023
I did not record data prior to laying, but will note that Caliman (male) was the primary deliverer of nesting material at that time.
I will create a separate post for the Nestling Period.
At Mount Ibuki, there is a point to be made in that the female stopped visiting her eyrie altogether for nearly a month, and in her absence the male delivered nesting material on three separate days. Otherwise, the delivery of nesting material throughout the entirety of the brood-rearing period is normal for this species.
"Once the nesting season has started, both sexes of eagles continue to add greenery and fresh material to the nest. The female makes most deliveries of nest material during incubation and brood-rearing. Half of nests in southwestern Idaho and southeastern Oregon contain fresh nesting material during later stages of the nesting cycle. All successful nesting attempts monitored in Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska (n = 805) contained fresh nesting material or greenery during late brood-rearing (CLM). It is not uncommon for eagles to place greenery in alternative nests within a territory (EHC, T. Craig, personal communication). Such behavior may function as a signal of territorial occupancy to other eagles or to repel ectoparasites at occupied nests." - The CornellLab of Ornithology
