Re: CUIBUL ACVILEI DE MUNTE NR. 2 - THE NEST OF THE GOLDEN EAGLE 2 (AQUILA CHRYSAETOS) 2023
Stream reset, data missing. 1 feeding? 1 delivery? 1 corvid.
04:56:26 - Lucina skawks thrice. Skawk-wawk-wawk-wawk-wawk! She is barking towards the back slope. Be gone!
05:09:18 - She leaves silently towards the lower left corner. Eaglet not so silent.
05:53:28 - Eaglet chirps at someone as they pass the eyrie.
06:31:11 - We can hear Lucina breaking a branch free nearby.
06:31:39 - Lucina returns silently from the right, with a stick in her beak. 1 hour, 22 minutes away.
06:32:28 - She leaves silently towards the right, and passes behind the lens heading left. We know this thanks to eaglet's watchful gaze.
06:44:45 - Eaglet is chatting at a parent who must be perched within sight. A scratchy, tsyuk, tsyuk, tsyuk or pssa, pssa, pssa. . . Remembering that both of these are the same vocalization, but various researchers have given them these two different labels.
07:10:48 - Eaglet stretches his/her neck for a better look, and vocalizes with renewed vigor. The parent is off to the left beyond our view.
07:15:02 - They pass overhead to the right.
07:16:20 - It was Mom. Here she comes with a large conifer spray in her talons, silently from the right. 44 minutes away.
07:17:11 - And off she goes, again with nary a peep, to the right. She passes behind the lens heading left.
07:37:38 - After a decent period of silence, eaglet again spies someone, and revs up the chirp box. Lucina or Caliman is near.
07:51:24-07:56:14 - A screechy voiced eaglet stands for a record breaking 4 minutes, 50 seconds!
Settling down with a yawn.
08:24:14 - The snapping of a branch. Eaglet raises his/her head briefly. Does not vocalize.
08:43:12 - A Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius) calls, waking eaglet.
09:17:03 - Eaglet tracks a parent flying over the eyrie. Lucina's voice soon pierces the air.
09:20:19 - Alarm call from unknown species, probably accompanying Lucina. It reminds me of a peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) alarm call
Lucina vs. peregrine falcon? Difficult to hear. You'll likely need ear phones, and eaglet yells over most of it, unfortunately.
09:44:47 - Eaglet calling to the skies again. Plenty of aerial activity this morning.
09:47:05 - Lucina returns with a conifer spray. 2 hours, 30 minutes away.
09:47:44 - Lucina is off, silently towards the right.
09:50:20 - Peregrine falcon (?) in a dog fight with the eagles, alarming again. Less eaglet yelling in this recording.
16:48:47 - The stream had to be reset to a lower resolution to continue functioning. I lost time.
17:23:42 - Stocatto raven calls.
17:35:26 - Eaglet rattle-chirping.
17:36:00 - Eaglet right wing-leg-tail stretch.
17:38:21 - Some rain becomes visible.
17:58:31 - Eaglet shakes off.
18:06:07 - A little rain hits the lens.
18:09:43, 18:09:55 - Northern raven (Corvus corax) "haa", begging vocalizations.
18:22:35 - Hooded crow (Corvus cornix) calls.
Lucina returns silently from the right with prey in her talons.
Eaglet quickly claims it. We can also see that Lucina has a full crop, which is very nice to see. I can't recall seeing her crop full since May 26th. Unknown period of time away.
She gives her eager eaglet some space.
18:50:33 - Lucina leaves silently towards the lower left corner.
18:52:33 - Eaglet tries to feed with back to us, so we can't observe success or failure.
18:57:30 - S/he drags the prey closer to the lens. It is the haunch, and black scaled leg of a corvid with its well-developed passerine hallux.
19:01:21 - Eaglet manages to stand upon the prey, and successfully tear meat free.
19:03:10 - Lucina calls in the distance, and eaglet responds. There is some excitement in her vocalizations.
19:11:28 - Eaglet pulls the foot up, allowing us to judge scale.
This is the back half of a hooded crow, Lucina held up for us in 2021. They're pretty small. Maybe smaller than what new eaglet is tearing at. It would look smaller if it weren't so close to the lens, and in Zenit's talons.
Here is Zenit with a raven. Decent size. But. They are chunked up differently. This is mostly the chest cavity with the lower half torn up, legs dangling. Not clearly visible. Let's just call today's crow a "corvid".
19:35:17 - Lucina is calling.
19:35:40 - She swoops across from the back slope, and alights in the upper branches above the nest. 45 minutes away.
19:36:14 - Lucina drops down into the nest. Still talking.
1st feeding? 19:36:49-19:48:08 - Approx. 12 minute feeding. Last bite is the leg. Eaglet manages to swallow it whole.
Raven foot in Zenit's mouth. Similar age. Hmm. Ah well, moving on:
Crop check.
19:58:14 - Allopreening.
20:16:10 - Lucina leaves in a hurry, calling immediately after her exit. It is windy.
20:20:40 - Lucina returns silently, alighting on the back right branch. 4 minutes away.
20:20:45 - She hops to the nest.
20:26:22 - Broods eaglet.
20:56:42 - More allopreening.
21:22:44 - Lucina begins to settle in for the night, with a tuck of the beak into her left scapulars. Good night, Bucovina.

3 feedings total. 2 self-feedings. 2 deliveries. 1 nestling passerine (Lucina brought), 2 nestling passerines (Caliman brought).
05:42:26
06:01:26 - Strange, eerie sound, followed by lots of dog barking. The initial sound may have been the dog, but I'm not confident. What do you think?
06:14:32 - It is difficult to hear without damaging my ears, but it sure sounds as if there are many ongoing raven "haa" calls. As if a great feast is near. These calls begin before the previous strange sound. Maybe the dog spooked a scavenger, or maybe s/he is at a different location entirely. Who knows.
06:14:39 - Lucina begins honing in on some activity. From this point on, we see minute triagulations, and long necks for better views.
06:21:38 - Yes, it's lots of raven (Corvus corax) activity. There must be a food bonanza, or some eager raven kids who don't know the danger lurking in their parent's territory.
Maybe Lucina is going to go check it out now.
06:28:42 - She leaves silently towards the right.
07:54:48 - Lucina returns silently from the lower left corner. 1 hour, 26 minutes away.
Long neck. Something briefly grabs eaglet's attention beyond the nest.
08:26:43
A wee snooze.
To be continued PDT tomorrow. . .

3 feedings total. 2 self-feedings. 2 deliveries. 1 nestling passerine (Lucina brought), 2 nestling passerines (Caliman brought).
08:43:05 - Lucina calling tysuk-tsyuk-tsyuk, looking left. Tracks Caliman, beyond our sight, to the right.
08:49:55 - More vocalizing. She moves into launch position.
08:52:04 - Lucina leaves silently towards the lower left corner.
08:53:05 - She returns silently from the lower left corner. 1 minute away. Well, it is raining.
09:37:10 - Eurasian jays scolding.
09:38:38 - Lucina leaves silently towards the right.
12:36:52 - Lucina returns silently with prey in her right talons. 2 hours, 58 minutes away.
12:37:05 - She talks softly as her eaglet claims the prey. A nestling passerine of pale beak, and feet. Lucina moves to the left corner branch.
12:37:42 - She leaves towards the lower right corner, calling into the distance.
1st self-feeding. 12:38:28 - First bite of nestling.
12:41:32 - Caliman alights from the right, delivering prey in his right talons.
12:41:58 - He leaves towards the lower right corner. Eaglet stops mantling.
12:43:55 - Last bite. Approx. 5 minute feeding. Source: first nestling. This was not the first self-feeding ever, but was the first that began, and ended completely unassisted.
Down the hatch.
12:45:25 - Eaglet finds one of the nestlings Papa delivered. Appears to be the same unknown species of the first, brought by Mom.
2nd self-feeding. 12:46:07 - First bite of second nestling.
12:48:46
12:49:13 - Last bite. Approx. 3 minutes. Source: second nestling.
12:54:34 - Lucina passes behind the eyrie, in front of the lens.
12:54:48 - She returns silently from the lower left corner with a conifer spray in her feet. 17 minutes away.
12:54:59 - Lucina pulls a third nestling from Caliman's delivered clump of material.
3rd feeding. 12:56:00-12:58:14 - Approx. 2 minute feeding. Source: third nestling.
12:59:07 - Lucina leaves silently towards the lower right corner.
14:17:54 - Eaglet wing exercises, and a left wing-leg-tail stretch.
14:18:24 - More wing exercises.
16:59:56, 17:00:03, 07, 09, 15, 21. . . - Northern raven (Corvus corax) haa calls. Singular. Maybe there is a nest nearby.
17:37:18 - Eaglet wing exercises.
17:46:00 - Lucina returns silently from the right with a full crop.
Eaglet didn't even notice she'd arrived until this moment.
17:46:28 - Lucina leaves silently towards the lower left corner.
17:48:54 - We can hear her vocalizing in the distance. Tsyuks/pssas.
17:49:31-18:06:33 - Here it is, folks. The 17 minute record-breaking stand!!! It's out of the park!
19:24:25 - Rattle-chirping begins.
20:01:13 - Lucina returns silently from the left, behind the lens. 2 hours, 15 minutes away.
20:08:09 - Eaglet ducks under Mom.
Quickened rattle-chirping. Eaglet may be cold. The temperature is lower than it has been, and once eaglet settles back under Mom the rattles become softer, and eventually stop until Lucina shifts or allopreens.
21:24:22 - Lucina tucks her beak into her left scapulars, settling in for the night.

Re: CUIBUL ACVILEI DE MUNTE NR. 2 - THE NEST OF THE GOLDEN EAGLE 2 (AQUILA CHRYSAETOS) 2023
A note: I will be leaving to visit my mother this Wednesday, which is still two days away for California, on the 14th. I won't return until the 17th. Good news is that I am not going to have to move away from my home. Disaster averted for now. That would have caused a much greater interruption in my ability to record life at the eyrie. I will attempt to pick this back up as quickly as I can, and post some sort of backlog. Again, no pressure on sharing observations, but know that they will be appreciated if anyone would like to do so.

Re: CUIBUL ACVILEI DE MUNTE NR. 2 - THE NEST OF THE GOLDEN EAGLE 2 (AQUILA CHRYSAETOS) 2023
1 feeding total. 1 self-feeding. + fed tiny bits of old scrap. 2 deliveries. 1 bare spine (Lucina). 1 passerine nestling (Caliman).
04:58:07 - Lucina leaves silently towards the lower left corner.
05:43:34, 05:43:53 - Here is that strange sound from yesterday again. It must be a domesticated dog or a young gray wolf. The dog was barking earlier. This recorded section is more obviously canid, puppy-like. Not a mature sounding howl of a wolf, say. One can hear that the ravens are present again, presumably at a feast. Gray wolf (Canis lupus) pups would only be about two months old at most, by this date. It is probably another dog, but it is nice to think of wolves roaming near the eyrie. It is so that wolves begin to move their pups to rendezvous sites at two months of age.
05:44:33 - Here is the dog barking, and a howl in the background while the dog is still barking. And ravens. Delightful. ;>
06:35:00 - Eaglet casts up a pellet.
Bird watching.
07:36:42 - Yawn.
07:38:36 - Eaglet watches as a small songbird darts back and forth, to and from the eyrie.
Streeetch.
07:40:57 - The bird watching continues.
07:49:24 - S/he plays with the pellet cast up earlier.
Mid-preen.
08:09:00 - Sneaking leap attack! Wing exercises follow.
09:26:22 - Lucina returns silently from the right, with a fir spray in her left foot. 4 hours, 28 minutes away.
09:26:49 - Lucina leaves silently towards the right.
13:13:25 - After long periods of rest, eaglet chirping, sits up on the tarsi.
13:13:58 - Lucina returns silently from the lower left corner, with a full crop, for the third day in a row. She does carry a bare spine for eaglet, but it is about as bare as it gets. 3 hours, 47 minutes away.
A parallel opportunity to judge scale. How tall is eaglet?
13:17:27 - Lucina leaves silently towards the lower left corner.
13:21:50 - Rain hits the lens.
14:32:02 - Eaglet chirping again, sits up on tarsi. S/he can see a parent. They are around the eyrie a fair amount. I am not recording every observation today.
14:44:34 - Eaglet tracks an insect buzzing around the beak.
14:50:29 - Wing exercises.
15:23:04 - Caliman delivers prey from the right, in his right talons. He also has a full crop.
Their crops may be full from the meal that the bare spine belonged to, or they are feasting at the location of all the raven activity we've been hearing in the mornings. Large prey that attracts vagrant ravens into the territory of mated pairs, who would otherwise feast silently. All this activity may attract other scavengers, even large apex ones, such as golden eagle, or gray wolf, or brown bear, or not-so-apex domesticated dogs. Not only can it be impossible to carry to the eyrie, but one must contend with these other potential dangers. It would be beneficial nonetheless! Lucina, and Caliman will maintain strength.
15:23:11 - Caliman hops to the back right branch, away from mantling eaglet. The nestling's feet are visible under eaglet's wing. Pale scales.
15:23:55 - He leaves to the right.
This may be the same species of passerine nestling from yesterday. Unlike hares or other mammalian prey who may not be as active in the open during wet weather, nestlings are all in one basket, so to speak. Their behavior does not change on rainy, windy, or foggy days. One must simply find the nest.
1st self-feeding. 15:25:53 - First self-fed bite of nestling passerine.
15:27:51
15:28:13
15:29:39 - Last bite. Source: nestling passerine. Approx. 4 minutes.
17:20:10 - Lucina returns silently with a stick in her beak, alighting on the lower hidden trunk branch. 4 hours, 23 minutes away.
17:40:14 - She hops to the nest.
17:40:56 - Leaves silently to the right.
15:51:33 - Lucina is calling in the distance.
17:55:30 - Again. Trilling tsyuks.
18:22:11 - More vocalizations.
18:28:15 - Again. Eaglet is watching her flights beyond the nest.
18:31:45 - Very excited trilling tsyuks. Caliman is definitely near.
18:32:26 - Lucina returns from the upper right corner, shaking a branch on her drop in.
18:36:41 - Allopreens.
Lucina makes nestorations. Not the last.
18:54:12 - Lucina picks up the old pine marten (Martes martes) skull with the strip of hide on its nose. Still present in the nest!
18:55:30 - She is more than aware of how hungry her eaglet is, for she begins offering tiny bites from what she can strip off of this old thing.
19:06:14 - Mom pulls the old roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) leg from deep in the woodwork of the pantry. These "survival scraps" helped tide Zenit over on some even slimmer days once upon a time.
19:06:38 - Eaglet rattle-chirps, and loses balance near the nest edge, but there is more nest behind. Not as precarious as before, at least. That edge of the nest continues to provoke anxious-making moments, though, doesn't it.
19:07:36 - Lucina tears at the remaing hide on the legs. Eaglet moves to the back of the nest.
19:08:58 - Mom tries to carry the legs to eaglet, but eaglet keeps moving away, and does so again.
19:11:28 - Ah well. Allopreens. She is trying her best.
Moving another stick by eaglet.
Turns back for more allopreening. She loves her darling. Gentle, fierce predators.
19:25:34 - Rattling, eaglet ducks under Lucina.
20:30:35 - Lucina, and eaglet are settled in for the night. She tucks her beak into her left scapular feathers. Night, night.
The weather forecast lists rain every day for at least nine days, and possible thunderstorms. This may be challenging. Best of luck to this family!

4 feedings total. 2 self-feedings. 3 deliveries. 1 large meat chunk - Caliman, 1 small unknown species - Caliman, 1 red fox (Vulpes vulpes) pup - Lucina.
Damp, foggy morning.
Lucina quickly sets to work trying to process the old roe deer leg some more, for eaglet.
05:23:51 - First meager bite of hide or tendon.
05:37:18 - Last bite. Approx 14 minutes, though I wouldn't call this being fed in any meaningful way.
While Mom takes a break, eaglet checks out the leg for self.
05:37:18 - Lucina watches, preens her feathers into shape, then leaves silently towards the lower left corner.
06:44:33 - A black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) begins calling.
Eaglet seems to be sleeping more this morning. Conserving energy and/or warmth, perhaps.
09:13:39 - Lucina returns silently from the right, landing low on the nest edge. 3 hours, 36 minutes away.
We can't see her, but we can hear the rustle, and see the nest shake whilst eaglet rises, chirping.
She hops up into the nest.
After briefly picking up the deer leg again, and staring dejectedly into the pantry, Lucina leaves silently to the right.
09:19:32 - Eaglet tries his/her beak at pulling tendons. No real success.
09:28:15 - How about with that old marten skull? Nope.
11:17:28 - Caliman managed to deliver a large meaty chunk from the Great Feast.
11:17:44 - He leaves.
11:17:45 - Eaglet is already tearing at the meal.
1st self-feeding. 11:18:08 - First bite.
11:28:52 - BIG bite.
11:30:35 - Last bite? Approx. 12 minutes. Source: large meat chunk.
11:17:41-12:36:31 - Record breaking 1 hour, 18 minute stand. Go eaglet!
12:57:45 - Starts picking at the meat again.
2nd self-feeding. 13:01:25, 13:02:18, 13:03:38, 13:03:57 - Some decent sized bites.
13:05:42 - Last bite. Approx. 7 minutes. Source - large meat chunk.
14:21:29 - Lucina returns silently from the lower left corner with a full crop.
3rd feeding. 14:23:47 - She is finally able to feed the first bite to eaglet, who kept pulling meat away before it was able to be processed into smaller pieces.
14:25:23 - This last bite has not been torn small. It is nearly too much.
14:26:27 - Lucina leaves silently towards the lower left corner before it's swallowed.
14:28:25 - Eaglet finally tears off, and swallows part of it. Approx. 5 minutes. Source: large meat chunk.
14:44:18 - Eaglet self-feeds another big bite.
15:23:16 - Lucina returns silently from the right. Her crop is even bigger! 57 minutes away.
4th feeding. 15:25:14 - First fed bite.
Caliman delivers prey hidden amongst greenery in his left talons.
15:38:33 - He leaves.
15:53:13 - Last fed bite. Approx. 28 minutes. Source: large meat chunk.
15:57:38 - Lucina leaves silently towards the lower left corner.
18:42:29 - She returns silently from the right. 2 hours, 45 minutes away.
18:46:01 - Leaves silently towards the lower right corner.
19:26:37 - Returns silently from the right. 40 minutes away.
19:26:57 - Leaves silently after a mere twenty seconds towards the left corner.
19:54:11 - Lucina silently delivers a red fox (Vulpes vulpes) pup from the right. This is the ninth fox pup of the season. 28 minutes away.
21:14:53 - Eaglet ducks under Mom. No scapular beak tuck. They are settled in for the night.

3 feedings. 1 delivery. 1 roe deer fawn - Caliman.
05:26:08 - Eaglet talon-strikes old red fox pup's head.
05:43:36-08:20:18 - Lucina departs for 2 hours, 37 minutes.
06:54:31 - Eaglet attacks the fox pup again. Picks at it.
07:00:19 - First self-fed bite of old red fox pup. Minimal success, however. Not quite a feeding.
08:04:32 - More talon-strikes, and attempts at feeding on fox pup.
1st feeding. 08:22:11-09:16:45 - Approx. 54 minutes. Source: old red fox pup.
09:19:24-10:37:58 - Lucina departs for 1 hour, 18 minutes. Returns with sticks in beak.
10:08:08 - Eaglet spreads wings out whilst panting. Hot in the direct sunlight.

11:04:23 - A few calls from a parent in the distance.
11:09:46 - Eaglet tracks flight over eyrie, calling.
12:01:42-13:41:04 - Lucina departs for 1 hour, 40 minutes. Returns with sticks in beak.
2nd feeding. 13:47:41-14:01:21 - Approx. 14 minutes. Source: old red fox pup. Eaglet is stuffed.

14:07:33 - Lucina leaves silently to the right.
14:10:57 - More eaglet wing exercises.
14:15:47 - Caliman delivers a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) fawn. Lucina is vocalizing.
14:15:53 - Caliman talks softly, and begins to move out of the way.
14:15:55 - Lucina has followed him in, trilling pssas. 8 minutes away.
14:16:24 - Caliman hops to the left corner branch.
14:16:59 - He leaves.
14:21:50-14:49:38 - Lucina departs for 28 minutes. Returns with fir spray in feet.

I was away for 3 days and I didn't have access to the computer, only sporadically on the phone I could follow the activity from the nest.
I was away at work in the delegation, but I made sure everything was working well on the live stream from the nest.
I want to ask you one thing: I noticed that sometimes when the eaglet vocalizes as if it is hoarse and has no tone in its voice, it vocalizes without a voice as if it were hoarse. I don't remember that Zenit was vocalized in the same way, so hoarse. For what reason, will she be of a different gender than Zenit? I have no concrete clue to figure out what gender it is, just a tendency towards the female sex.

Re: CUIBUL ACVILEI DE MUNTE NR. 2 - THE NEST OF THE GOLDEN EAGLE 2 (AQUILA CHRYSAETOS) 2023
I've noticed this hoarseness too. It occurs during the generally louder solicitation calls. I'm not certain what to think of it. I've not noticed it at the other nests observed with working microphones, including nests with ringed eaglets who were presumed female (Kelly, Margit). I did notice some hoarseness from Klints in Latvia, but that situation was tragic, and did not mirror what is being observed at this nest here in lovely Bucovina. Lucina's eaglet is well-fed, and not at all weak.
"Dixon and Jollie reported that pitches of individual males and females differ enough in tone to be distinguishable, with males having a more high-pitched voice and females a more “barking” voice. There have been no detailed studies of difference in sounds of male and females." - Cornell Lab of Ornithology
Around Day 40, it is said that many nestling calls become indistinguishable from adult vocalizations. I am not in complete agreement, but it may be a shift is occurring in the vocal chords at this age that could account for the hoarseness. It is definitely something I will listen for in the future. It could also be unique, individualistic. All I can say is that it is not a consistent quality I have heard among other female nestlings. Wish I could be of more help.

16:46:34-16:48:28 - Lucina departs for 2 minutes. Returns with a bare lichen covered branch in her left foot.
16:53:34-17:16:03 - Lucina departs for 23 minutes.
16:56:28 - Eaglet panting.
3rd feeding. 17:22:15-17:42:27. Approx. 20 minutes. Source: old red fox pup.
Crop check.
17:49:08-20:02:17 - Lucina departs for 2 hours, 13 minutes.
19:47:35 - Eaglet play-hunting with the fox's paw.
19:52:36 - Leaping wing exercises.
20:02:43-21:29:22 - Lucina departs for 1 hour, 27 minutes.
21:07:01 - While she was away. . . more talon-striking, on sticks.
21:08:11 - A leaping attack.
21:08:52 - And more wing exercises. Not half bad.
22:10:04 - 41 minutes after her return, Lucina tucks her beak in. Content to spend another night on the nest with her eaglet.

Re: CUIBUL ACVILEI DE MUNTE NR. 2 - THE NEST OF THE GOLDEN EAGLE 2 (AQUILA CHRYSAETOS) 2023
1 feeding. 0 deliveries.
Eaglet wing exercises - 09:53:10, 09:53:41, 09:55:08, 12:14:32, 14:40:49, 17:34:10, 17:35:58, 17:38:02, 19:54:29.
Talon-strike play - 12:16:36, 13:54:50, 13:55:55, 19:47:52.
04:48:54-09:50:19 - Lucina departs for 5 hours, 2 minutes. Returns with a fir spray in her left foot.
Crop drop.
07:34:03 - Eaglet panting in the direct sunlight. Plenty warm in the morning hours.
09:52:45-14:41:33 - Lucina departs for 4 hours, 49 minutes. A light rain begins falling upon her return.
Nice girth.
10:10:21 - Crawls on tarsi across the nest.
11:53:48 - Wing stretch.
Talon-strike.
14:00:33 - Observing nest critters.
Lucina's return. Eaglet checks her talons. Definitely empty.
Eaglet insists on passing between Lucina, and the eyrie trunk. It takes some force. When eaglet pushes through, s/he rushes to the back edge of the nest a little too quickly, and has to apply some brakes.
1st feeding. 15:13:08 - Meager bites from old red fox pup's paw.
15:15:29 - Eaglet grabs the paw, and swallows it whole. Well, that's that, then.
15:15:38 - Lucina finds another fox paw hidden in the woodwork. This one is easier to tear apart into bite sized pieces.
15:19:04 - Even so, eaglet eventually grabs, and swallows this one whole too. All gone! Mom searches the pantry for something else to feed.
15:21:10-17:45:42 - Lucina departs for 2 hours, 24 minutes.
17:36:35 - Pulls feather out of the fir sprays. The wind takes it. Eaglet pursues.
17:38:02.
Some light rain has blown onto the lens.
17:59:44-21:39:01 - Lucina departs for 3 hours, 40 minutes.
19:55:57.
Preening.
Bird watching.
20:34:38 - Talking to a parent? Soft talk.
20:38:02 - Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) barking.
21:02:05 - Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius) scolding.
Feet closer to the lens will appear larger. They are a decent size, though. Nice, thick tarsi too. Maybe Stelian is right.
"In a sample of 33 autumn migrants captured in Montana and Wyoming, adult females were heavier than juvenile females, but there was no similar age-related difference in weights of males." - Lish, J. W., R. Domenech, B. E. Bedrosian, D. H. Ellis, and M. Payton (2016). Wing loading in North American Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos). Journal of Raptor Research 50: 70–75
S/he's still pretty young yet. Maybe Caliman will be courageous enough to help us compare sizes, as s/he grows closer to fledging.
22:12:48 - Eaglet tucks beak into left scapular feathers, whilst Mom allopreens. Aw.
22:13:53 - Lucina tucks her beak into her right scapular feathers.
00:15:57 - A dormouse visits the eyrie. Thank you to Johan for this time stamp! Remember, although similar in appearance, the tree squirrels are diurnal species.
There are four species of dormice in Romania. Two of these have black markings over the eyes, so we can key those out. That leaves the hazel dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius), and the larger European edible dormouse (Glis glis). The former has a body length of about 10 cm, the latter being 14 to 19 cm. I am thinking this is the latter? A fascinating species! "They can reach maximum lifespan of 13 years, which is a Methuselah-like age for a small rodent." - Edible dormice: The older they get the more they rejuvenate their cells
Compare to the width of the eyrie trunk:
